Thanks to our donors, AEP was able to fund the repainting of the entire Graceland International School campus in Gusau, Zamfara, Nigeria. In addition, the funding included the repairs to doors and windows. The school, built from 2011-2017, was long overdue for a facelift. The new colors gave the school a fresh, clean look. The results, seen below, are quite beautiful!

Our newest project in Godogodo is the third rural area where students received their education in crumbling buildings as well as a repurposed chicken coop. Conditions in the buildings, but especially in the coop, were difficult at best. The coop, constructed of zinc metal sheets, was stifling in the summer heat. During the rainy season, torrential downpours and heavy wind soak both staff and students alike and send books and papers flying off of desks. We are pleased to report that this project has been completed. Two new buildings, as well as three renovated structures are now full of students. A separate building now houses toilets and wash stations for students and staff, connected to a previously provided well. New desks, 250 in total, have been built by local tradesmen. The completed security wall has had gates installed to ensure safety for all. This is now a K-grade 9 campus. As we begin a new year and on this International Day of Education, we pause to thank all of our supporters who have made our work possible. Since 2009, Africa Education Partnership (AEP) has worked in Nigeria with dedicated partners to build and renovate schools, provide clean water and toilets, safety walls, desks, playground equipment, and educational supplies. During the past year, AEP has made a concerted effort to establish an Education Fund in order to provide access to a quality education for those students who cannot afford school fees. While per pupil costs for education in the United States average $16,000 (individual state rates vary greatly), the average cost for a student in Nigeria is $300. The phrase “For the price of a cup of coffee daily, you can…” may sound commonplace, but in this case, it rings true. So on this special day, we stop to appreciate the value of a good education and the “village” that has come together to support our students.  |
