Bishop Markus Dogo of Kafanchan and his wife, Mrs. Nana Dogo, arrived in Connecticut in early October to begin a busy and fruitful series of engagements, promoting the work of Africa Education Partnership and our sister organization Kateri Medical Services.

AEP is working with our partners in Kafanchan to fund renovations across seven schools- five Nursery/Primary schools and two high schools. Bishop Markus expressed his deep gratitude to all of our donors for supporting the upgrades completed to this point, which have greatly improved the learning and teaching environment for teachers and students.

Bishop Markus spent a day with the full Africa Education Board, giving us details of how these enhancements have raised the morale of teachers and students. Parents and the community at large are very happy that their children are being taught in a safe setting. There is still a lot of work to be done in Kafanchan; Bp. Markus laid out the next set of priorities at the other schools.  Through dialogue, we have a good idea as to where our next focus will be.

Additional Enhancements to the Kafanchan schools
  • Well drilling/construction for clean drinking water at Kogum River Nursery/Primary school, funded by Avon-Canton, CT Rotary Club through collaboration with AEP.  This well makes water available to both the school and the wider community, bringing renewal and improved health to everyone.

  • Toilets and washing facilities. This is an urgent priority for the three rural schools; the two other school sites need renovations to their facilities.
  • Books and educational materials. AEP is committed providing books, especially in the areas of the sciences and technology to each of our partners’ schools.
  • Helping girls stay in school through the provision of handmade, reusable feminine hygiene kits. AEP is working with Mrs. Nana Dogo’s “Women’s Center” to provide each girl in the schools with a feminine hygiene pack, so that stigma of menstruation will not keep them out of school during their menses. Flannel fabric is not readily available in Nigeria. Donations from individuals enabled us to send flannel and other needed materials back to Nigeria with Nana Dogo. More will be shipped this month.
