Work has continued on the GIS dormitory project with walls up and the roofing framework in place. The dormitory will afford girls a chance to continue their education past the compulsory grade 6 required by the Nigerian government.
This dormitory fills a great need in this area. In northern Nigeria, fewer than 25% of girls get a chance to go to school. Educational facilities offering schooling past grade 6 are few and far between. Parents seeking this opportunity for their children often find that a suitable junior-secondary school is too far away for them to transport, as there is no bus service for students. A school with dormitory facilities is often the only answer.
Now GIS will be able to offer an educational opportunity for girls, hopefully by this coming September. The project includes a kitchen and dining hall, along with a dormitory equipped with shower and laundry facilities.
Our next challenge is to help restore the well, as water is increasingly scarce and must be purchased. In addition, funding is needed to furnish the dorm rooms for the girls.
