Kafanchan Projects

The work in Kafanchan represents our second partnership.  There are seven schools located on five different sites, scattered throughout the region.  Each site has existing classroom buildings in various stages of disrepair.  Our partners have used their resources judiciously, building and repairing when possible- but the needs are great and their resources are limited.  Our challenge is to assist our partners with renovations, based on their prioritizing the needs.  In addition to renovations, this may also include new construction.
In addition, we want to make sure each school site has access to clean water, toilets, and safety perimeter walls.  It will be a challenge to prioritize these needs and raise the needed funding but in time, we will work toward that goal.

Initial Research on Needs:

Jagindi Tasha School

Picture
Jagindi Tasha is a rural school in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Nigeria. It is a second rural school that is located about an hour from Kafanchan.  This school was built around 1970 as a Nursery/Primary School only.  With a rapidly growing population, an additional classroom lock is on the list of needs.

The last rural school is another Nursery/Primary school only.  It was constructed around 1948. An additional classroom block is needed here as well.  We have been able to provide a well for clean water and toilets for staff and students.

Kafanchan Nursery / Primary School

Picture
Kafanchan School is located on the site of the Cathedral and has made use of some of the cathedral’s old buildings. The Nursery/Primary School was built in the early 1990’s and has several classroom blocks full of students.  The secondary school took over some of the original cathedral buildings constructed in the 1930’s.  These include a hostel and bathrooms, now used for boarding students and a chapel, now used as an examination hall. A separate structure serves as a kitchen.

Kafanchan Secondary School

Picture
Kafanchan, the original school location in the region. Many of the buildings here were built in the 1930’s.  The fact that they are still in use today as a secondary school is a testament to their sturdy construction.  That being said, the buildings are all in need of renovations.  The need is great and Bishop Markus and his team work hard to prioritize the most urgent requests with limited funds- there is simply not enough to go around to repair everything, especially when trying to manage seven schools.

Gidan Waya  Nursery / Primary School

Picture
Gidan Waya is the newest site in the Kafanchan region, consisting of a Nursery/Primary School and a Secondary School.  The site was built during 2011-12 after trouble near the Kafanchan School between rival groups. There was violence in the area and townspeople were afraid to send their children back to school even after things settled. Bishop Markus had just been appointed and started the new site at Gidan Waya.
This facility is currently in good shape; we have no projects scheduled here at this time.

Gidan Waya Secondary School

The Gidan Waya site has the newest facilities.  Built in 2012, this campus provides both education for pre-school through secondary students.
The school has a science lab and hostel for students.  There is an examination hall under construction so that students can sit for their exams.  There is a clinic adjacent to the school as well.
At this point in time, we will not be working directly on these facilities.  While there are needs, the other sites have greater priorities.

Kogum River Nursey / Primary School

This is the most rural of the three remaining sites and was by far in the worst condition- the money simply does not stretch that far.  It is located about 1 ½ hours out of Kafanchan center. The site was developed around 1972 and is a Nursery/Primary School only. There is talk of making this a secondary school in the future. There are 2 buildings in poor shape.

We have been able, through the generosity of our donors, to totally renovate both classroom blocks.  In addition, a well and toilets for staff and students have been completed.  We are grateful to the Avon-Canton Rotary Club for their assistance with this project.

An additional classroom block is needed and will be prioritized into the existing list of needs for future consideration.
